Sitting in a chair for prolonged periods could be sending you to an early grave. Several studies across the world agree.
One large-scale study in Australia, surveying 222,000 people found that adults who sat for eleven or more hours per day had a 40% increased risk of dying within the next three years, compared with those who sat for fewer than four hours a day.
Other studies from Canada and elsewhere in the world show similar results. So what can you do about it?
One increasingly popular way to solve the problem is to use a ‘standing desk’. Other alternatives include using an exercise ball instead of a chair.
But sometimes, that just isn’t possible or practical.
Enter a third option – the wobble cushion.
A wobble cushion allows you to use your existing chair but challenges your body to constantly adjust as you sit. This helps to build a stronger core and removes many of the problems found in the studies we’ve mentioned.
Your other alternative? Get up more, of course. A study in the British Medical Journal suggests that four hours of sitting is the ‘danger point’.
For desk job jockeys who don’t have the choice of a standing desk of exercise ball, the wobble cushion is a great way to go.
